Other Things to Worry About

Maya shook her head, “You know, I’ve been trying to figure those two out ever since I met them in Southport. They certainly don’t have your typical officer-enlisted relationship. And he’s not a line officer either, yet it seems to me that he has a certain experience with death. I haven’t asked but it’s obvious to me that this isn’t the first bad situation either one has been in. Do you know anything about that?”

Gabi shrugged and looked up at the ceiling for a moment then shifted her eyes back to Maya, “I know what you mean. I don’t think that episode with the wolves was his first time in a bad situation either. But I don’t know what they’ve been through before. I’ve never heard them talk about it. But regardless, I think we’re lucky to have them both.”

“Oh, no argument there,” Maya agreed. “Have you seen the way he’s got these girls wrapped around his fingers? It’s quite something. He gives them respect and encouragement and they’ve really responded; every one of them. He’s had them doing things their parents back home would be absolutely appalled by. We all had doubts about exposing them to some of the worse things but he and Molly insisted that we treat them as adults. And they’ve had to do some really difficult things. I do wonder how it would’ve gone if there had been some other senior male officer in charge here instead.”

“Good question. He does have a way with women for sure. But what kind of difficult things do you mean, Maya? The training they are getting? I’ve missed a lot.”

Maya hesitated before answering, “Gabi, after the crash there were so many dead and most of the adults who were left were either injured or taking care of the injured. These kids had to carry all the bodies from the main deck down to the cargo bay and then recover all the bodies of the cargo crew that were scattered all around the cargo bay. It was really bad. And some of them cleaned up the mess afterward. It was very, very bad, very ugly. But they never quit, and they never complained. Now he’s got them training to be Rangers. They’re training to be lookouts and they’re learning about leadership and how to shoot weapons. He even had some of them out there with him looking for demon wolves. You wouldn’t know it from looking at most of them, but these girls are some tough cookies.”

“Tough cookies? Oh si, yes I understand, tough cookies. I saw that when they were climbing up ropes to the top of the ship after running all the way to the lake and back. That was what, four miles, right? And they did it all twice with target practiced mixed in at every stop. That is good, no? They will need to be very tough for any of them to survive out here.”
